TUESDAY, APRIL 21
We continue to plant and prepare for the first tomato planting this weekend. We will be putting in 200-ish plants over the next few days. More will follow within the next couple of weeks once the plastic mulch is down. Then, we'll pray that there is not a late freeze!!
This weekend we will be planting our 2 best producers from last year...Early Girl and Early Cascacde. We hope to have these ready mid-late June. They are a medium sized tomato, officially called "saladette". They are juicy and full of flavor and we almost always sold out of these every week. One of our favorite customers said she liked slicing and eating them while standing over the kitchen sink so she didn't have to share them!
In addition, we'll be planting a few heirloom varieties this year: Arkansas Traveler, Brandywine Red and Yellow, and Cherokee Purple. These are old, tried and true tomatoes....probably the ones you picked in your grandmother's garden. They take longer to mature, but worth the wait! They will be ready mid-late July. We will also grow several varieties of the larger, slicer tomato that will be new for us this year.
Each week, we'll let you know some of the other crops we'll be growing this season. More warm season vegetables and melons will be planted soon.
We hope you are enjoying the warmer days of Spring as we are! Summer is just around the corner.......
